the mad monster maker
What kind of articles will we have next month? Who'll be in our Artists Corner? Still I'm waiting for inspiration to hit me on the noggin' with these Civil War drawings. What new comic will grace us and tickle your funny bone? Where will my story go? Will I have completed more of the Geometric busts? Will I be showing another drawing from the book, I Me Sinner. Just to tease your brain. You'll just have to wait and see. I promise I won't let you down.
If you have any idea's, comic ideas for our Creature or other classic monsters, creatures or aliens, or news that you feel should or could be included in my News Letter, just email me today or before the 1st of next month.\ And why not sign into my guest book too. And ... If you think your work should be spot lighted in our Artists Corner you should email me too.
Hope to see you then.
When it happens. If I can be there, I will.

Without a doubt, that's our Homer. He's a deep pit of emotions and joy. I'm so grateful
for this wonderful character, I get to work with each month, cause I get to show a side of
me, others might not known that existed. This month being Valentines Day, I get to
show off his tender feelings inside and out. For Homer, everything is growing up hearts
and flowers. Heart shaped leaves and heart shaped flowers. And that's Cupids
arrows poking through those hearts, all around him. I just love doing these two News
Letters, one for us, and one for Store 1220, on Woodhaven Boulevard, here in New
York, for the Home Depot.
With all these ways of expression I have, I'm truly blessed to be doing a light hearted
cartoon in this mix. Let's see ... Next month, Spring is right around the corner and
there's St. Patrick's Day. Humm, I already had Homer in a kilt and blowin' his
bagpipes. I've already set in up in a field of 4 leaf cover, so ... Don't worry I'll think of
something for Homer.
Hope to see you next month, when I'll show you what he's up to.

Chris Kalin
Oh yeah, I'm happy to be show casing Chris's work and a bit about his likes in
this months issue, of our News Letter. I think, I must know Chris for well over 10 years
now and I can't say he's ever disappointed me with his good nature or high spirited
love for the arts.
When Chris asked me to make a page for him on my site, I was delighted to take
up the undertaking. I've always known him to be bright a genuine doer, a person who
diversifies his artwork in many logical directions. Chris and I have some similar likes,
like "Man, I love that bike. I used to have the identical bike, right down to a T ... OK,
and then I woke up."
Chris and I used to work in the same Print Industry Pre-Press company, Quality
Graphics, here in Queens New York. He was and still is a fine retoucher. Because of
his good and unique sense for what professional art is, he always ended up with the
more creative projects in the shop. It was real high end stuff, done for agencies that
dealt with products like Chanel and Audi to name a few. I was the manager on the over
night shift, so I got to work one to one with Chris many times and grew to respect him
for all of his talents and wonderful nature. When we separated, having the company go
under, we still kept in touch, via email. And it wasn't a broad leap in my mind, saying to
myself, "Chris is a perfect candidate for our spotlight."
So with this said, how about you go to his personal page and check out his work and
some links to other projects he's done. No doubt, you'll be glad that you did.

Getting towards the end of the illustrating for this book is an exciting state of
affairs in my mind. Twenty-six in total and only seven to go. Each drawing
dredged up memories and feelings gone by so long ago and some that still bog
me down to this very day. Repetition of the same sins that weighed down my
soul, over and over, and over again in my life. Weakness, it's the strong suit in
my enemies hand, for that is for sure. Here is one of my latest drawings, one of
the last tid bits I'll be sending your way, till the book is published sometime in the
future. I titled this chapter and drew this with the title in mind, "Wont sleep ever
than than those years gone by. I remember, tossing and turning night after
dreaded night, night, hunting the darkest rooms of my parents house in search
for the "Thump" hunting the darkest rooms of my parents house in search for the
"Thump" and and the "Sense" that I was not alone in this space. All the dwellers
in the house the "Sense" that I was not alone in this space. All the dwellers in the
house slept slept in peace, but not me. I was caught up with the beasties that
roamed all in peace, but not me. I was caught up with the beasties that roamed
all around me, that swirled and danced, beasts that I saw glimpses of, as I
twisted, almost bound, in my sheets. These days of horror flew not passed, but
linger at there own pace and tempo. Every corner of my world, inside and out,
harbored evil demons, one more contorted then the next. "Wont sleep come?"
It never did.

Am I having fun or what? I think I'm in my glory tackling all
these funny bone drawings. I keep relating to this one drawing that hangs in
my bathroom, of a crowded subway car, with all sorts of silly advertisements
above the riders. Like one of the signs said in abbreviated test, "If you can
read this sign, you can't spell" I love that line. And another has people tied to
fence posts and says, "Get a job rewarding job as a fencepost." "Malcolm
McDougall. The Untamed Comic strip." Oh yeah, everyone has got to find
inspiration somewhere, that's it for me. Oh and the Far Side Comics are also
another inspiration for my humor. Take a few to check out the little blurbs
coming from all the corners of this comic. The sign on the front of the Creech's
cell tells of his charge for his arrest. "Arrested for the crime of trying to steal a
... What else? A COW you silly." There's a cow sun, calendar and toilet too.
See what else you can find, just for the fun of it. I've already decided on next
months theme for another Creature comic in this series. I can't wait to do it.
It's the mad guy from the village in the middle signing off for now. Until.
A Home Project that stimulates my art
Ever since I was a teen and found myself loving "art" in so many forms (monsters,
classic and B rated/cartoons/drawings) I knew I was destined to go on to places of
the heart that leaped out of my chest and onto the page or whatever I was doing at
the time. I can remember when getting a room all to myself, one where I could
design it as I please. I was just starting college and found that painting drew me like
a magnet, color too, shapes and the intensity of the human nature of creativity. I
found that on the canvas I could express myself, digging deep into my heart and
mind dreams and unleash an abundance of joy. Day after day in that room I tuned
into the space and said, "There's more here than what's on the surface." I wanted a
larger space, a more colorful environment, so I began to paint pictures upon the
walls. A window opening into a garden, a door opening their too. All of a sudden,
there was joy. Can you sense my excitement. So living with my laundry room for over
20 years now, drab and sullen, I drove myself towards that same spirit of joy. These
brick walls are now cartoon bricks, a study in patience and a love for doing
diorama's. This project is bringing me inner peace and a source for fun inspiration,
to sit on this toilet and contemplate ... FUN Idea's! There are two pieces of art, lol, oh
yeah art upon the walls, I focus on as I sit on the thrown. One is a grand picture
cartoon done by an artist who was committed I do think, it was published in 1978
and has been on my wall ever since, his name is Robert Stimati and the comic,
"MacDooogal Street, can you find Malcom MacDoogal?" The other is a loving scene
right out of the mind of the Simpson family. Just like my own family. lol

I must be working on portfolio's forever now. I've ones on my woodwork furniture and
projects in that direction. I've got one of my paintings from my college days. I've one,
compiled when I was trying to be a rep for other artists I knew, (a retoucher, a copy writer,
a hand letterer, two illustrators and me ... A would be illustrator lost in the beginnings of a
personality, not yet matured). Now I've two new portfolio's began some months back, that
will surely lead me to my end times, here on Earth. One for the saleable items, also sold
on this site, including items done and not up for sale because either sold already or
included in WIP book. I've broken the book into categories (painted models, scratch and
not scratch built diorama's and pencil drawings - horror, humor, emotions and good old
HD Homer) oh yes. This particular portfolio spans the wide array of styles and types of my
past and current art. In the near future I'll be adding another element to it, that being
paintings. There, I'll be going back to my roots as a painter from my college days, that will
be my jump point. Old painting style, new elements of design.
Then there is the second portfolio. Here, I've compiled all my B&W pencil drawings.
I clearly have a distinct and nurtured love for the 8 1/2 x 11 page format. Right now I've
over 70 pieces included, they are what I feel represent my abilities and desires to express
from past and current work. Here too, it's broken into categories, each sectioned by its
master page, with it's title for the art that follows. (The books that are WIP, cartoons,
emotions and again that Homer character.) No doubt, as I said up above, these are
portfolio's that will be a continuation of new pieces as they are created with equal merit to
the others included. I put message in the front of this book, "When I pass away, don't you
dare toss me out. This is the work of a life long struggle to express who and what I am. If
you do, I promise I'll come back and haunt you. Haunt you to the grave and beyond."

Homer's latest addition at the Depot.
Click on image to see a more viewable sized illustration
Well again, this month Homer was called into action, for the
Home Depot News Letter's cover page, with a cartoon titled,
"Spring has Sprung".
Another Illustration came from another direction, at the Depot,
when a Department Head of Paint asked me to create a
brochure needed for a Promotion that was going to be
happening.
Finally, another Department Head, this time from Flooring
asked if I would make a drawing on his orange apron, because
he had been asked to give the Home Depot chant at a rally out of
town. Marvin, this DH is a character himself, so putting a picture
of Homer on his apron was a labor of love.
Finally and finally, the manager of the store asked if I would
make a sign for the Garden Department. There I got to work in
full colour. What was my reward, just the joy of creating new work.

Well considering how many things that were on my
plate last month, I'm surprised that I got to fit in these
two models ... Ahhh, let's say, one and a half, the
Saucermen redo ended up being a WIP, after two
hours working out some of the elements of the piece
I just didn't have the energy to put another two or so
hours, to complete it. But you can still check out
what I've done on the separate page I made, for
these two models. I'm sure, with me working on the
upcoming show on May 1, I'll surely be fitting in other
models for a showing here next month. Until ...
Frankenstein and the
Monster from Hell. Another
paint-up for this bust from
Geometric Design. A bit
more contrasting colors, a
bit more detail overall. It
was fun to do.
Invasion of the Saucer
Men. One of those B
Rated schlock 50's flicks.
This is a clean up and
re-paint of a little model
that took second place
at the Chiller show, in
2003.
